Never alone
“Never Alone is a love letter to my sister Paulette, who took her own life at the age of 28.
It all started with an interview meeting with Dr Deepak Chopra and psychiatrist Diane Powell. At the end of it, I spoke about my sister’s passing and mentioned to Dr. Chopra the fact that every 40 seconds, someone dies by suicide… He was shocked by this number.
Following our exchange, Deepak felt compelled to start another discussion and he introduced me to his advisor, Poonacha Machaiah, who is now the CEO of the Chopra Foundation.
Initially, we were just observing the mental health space and then the pandemic struck, revealing the urgency of mental health issues.
Suddenly, we didn’t need to persuade people about its importance – we were being listened to.” GW
During the pandemic, we started thinking “How can we support and reach out to people who are struggling emotionally?”
Poonacha who is a technologist by trade, started working with a team on an AI emotional chatbot called PIWI, after my sister’s nickname but it’s also an acronym for “People Interacting With Intention”. Piwi gives you resiliency tools and can connect you with a therapist if needed, It’s a one on one. You can text her, or use Facebook messenger, basically it’s a free service through text messaging that allows people to have access to mental well-being tools.” GW
PIWI can engage in conversation, recognize patterns, and if it detects potential suicide risk, it refers the user to specialized therapists.
To this day there’s been over 24 million text messages exchanged on the platform, 16 million minutes of conversation, 19,000 suicide de-escalations, and given over 300,000 minutes of free therapy with actual therapists.
“Now, we’re broadening PIWI’s scope from suicide prevention to encompass overall mental well-being and hygiene, approaching it from a holistic consciousness perspective.” GW
Vision
